The Punisher was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. The character made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider- Man #129 in 1974. Gerry Conway conceived the character, inspired by a popular book series called The Executioner, and created the unique costume design with John Romita Sr., who enlarged the skull symbol on the Punisher's chest. Ross Andru was the first artist to draw the character for publication. Stan Lee, Marvel's editor-in-chief at the time, suggested the name "The Punisher" for the character.
