Victoria's Secret was created by American businessman Roy Raymond and his wife Gaye Raymond in 1977. Roy Raymond was inspired to start the brand after feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome while trying to buy lingerie for his wife in department stores. They aimed to create a sophisticated, Victorian-era inspired store where men would feel comfortable shopping for women’s lingerie. The brand name references Queen Victoria and the idea of a "secret" hidden beneath clothing. The first Victoria’s Secret store opened in Palo Alto, California. Roy and Gaye Raymond worked together on the concept, product selection, and store design. Roy Raymond later sold the company in 1982 to Leslie Wexner for $1 million.
