Vision, the Marvel superhero, was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema. He first appeared in Avengers #57, published in October 1968, as a powerful synthetic being who joined the Avengers.

The comic-book origins

Marvel’s Vision was inspired partly by an earlier character of the same name, created by writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby. That original Vision, also known as Aarkus, was an alien superhero who debuted in Marvel Mystery Comics #13 in 1940. Roy Thomas and John Buscema reworked the idea for the modern Marvel Universe. Their Vision was not an alien but an android constructed by the villain Ultron. Ultron used the body of the original Human Torch, Jim Hammond, and the brain patterns of Wonder Man to create him. Vision eventually rejected Ultron’s control and became one of Earth’s most important heroes.

Who created the film version?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe version was developed for film and television by Marvel Studios. Paul Bettany played Vision, beginning with Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. In the films, Tony Stark’s artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. becomes the consciousness placed inside Vision’s synthetic body, with the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead. This version differs from the comics in important ways. The comic character’s mind is linked to Wonder Man, while the MCU version is connected to J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s technology and the Mind Stone.

A separate character from DC

There’s also a DC Comics character called Vision, but he isn’t the same superhero. The Marvel character is the one most commonly associated with the name today, especially because of his central role in The Avengers and WandaVision. The short answer is simple: Roy Thomas and John Buscema created the modern Marvel Vision, while Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created the original Vision character in 1940.
