The World Wide Web (WWW) was created by Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, commonly known as Tim Berners-Lee. He invented the Web in 1989 while working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva. Berners-Lee proposed an information management system that merged hypertext with the Internet, leading to the creation of the first web browser, web server, and the foundational protocols HTML, HTTP, and URL. The first website was launched in December 1990 from CERN, and the Web was made freely accessible to the public in 1993. Berners-Lee also founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to oversee its ongoing development.
