Barry Pearl played Doody, one of the T-Birds, in the 1978 film version of Grease.

The character

Doody is the youngest and most innocent member of the T-Bird gang at Rydell High. He’s Frenchy’s boyfriend in the movie and provides much of the comic relief with his wide-eyed enthusiasm and memorable musical moments, including the cringe-funny “Those Magic Changes” serenades.

About Barry Pearl

Born Barry Lee Pearl on March 29, 1950, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he’s an American character actor with a long theatre, film, and TV career. Before landing the movie role, he was already connected to Grease : after graduating from Carnegie Mellon in 1973, he joined the first national tour of the stage musical, which began his decades-long association with the property.

Though Grease made him widely recognizable, Pearl didn’t become a major film star afterward. He worked steadily in television and especially in children’s theatre and TV, notably as Professor Tinkerputt in Barney’s Imagination Island and on the U.S. tour of Barney’s Big Surprise.

Later Grease connection

Pearl returned to the Grease universe in 2016, appearing in Fox’s live television special Grease: Live in a cameo role as Mr. Weaver, a talent agent. That appearance bookended his journey from the original stage tour to the iconic 1978 film and then to a modern televised revival.
