Beryllium was discovered by the French chemist Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin in 1798. He found beryllium in the oxide form within the minerals beryl and emerald. The element was initially called "glucinium" because some of its compounds had a sweet taste. Beryllium metal was later isolated in 1828 independently by Friedrich Wöhler and Antoine-Alexandre-Brutus Bussy through a chemical reduction process.
