Iridium was discovered in 1803 by the English chemist Smithson Tennant. He found it in the residue left when crude platinum was dissolved in aqua regia, a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids. Tennant named iridium after Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow, because many of its salts are colorful. He discovered it along with another new element, osmium, in London.
