who discovered neon

Neon was discovered in 1898 by the British chemists Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers in London. They discovered neon by chilling a sample of air until it liquefied, then warming the liquid air and capturing the gases as they boiled off. Neon was identified by its brilliant red-orange light when subjected to an electrical discharge. The name "neon" comes from the Greek word for "new".
