Silicon was discovered in its elemental form by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1823-1824. He obtained relatively pure silicon powder by heating potassium fluorosilicate and potassium, then purifying it through repeated washing. This discovery is generally credited as the first isolation of elemental silicon, despite earlier work by other chemists like Antoine Lavoisier, Sir Humphry Davy, Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac, and Louis Jacques Thénard, who either identified silicon in compounds or produced impure forms of it. Berzelius is recognized as the discoverer of silicon as an element.
