The colony of Georgia was founded by James Edward Oglethorpe. He led the first group of colonists to Georgia in 1733, establishing the colony with the support of a charter granted by King George II in 1732. Oglethorpe's vision was to create a philanthropic colony that would serve as a fresh start for the "worthy" poor and act as a buffer between the English colonies and Spanish Florida. He and 114 colonists landed at the Savannah River bluff on February 12, 1733, marking the official founding of Georgia.

James Oglethorpe's role extended beyond founding, as he also enforced policies like banning slavery initially and serving as a military and civil leader in the early colony. The colony was named after King George II, who granted the charter for its establishment.
