Acetaminophen was first synthesized by Harmon Northrop Morse in 1877 at Johns Hopkins University. He created it by reducing p-nitrophenol with tin in glacial acetic acid. Later, in 1887, Joseph von Mering conducted the first human trials of acetaminophen, then known as paracetamol, but it was initially less favored compared to other drugs due to some toxicity concerns. The drug did not come into common medical use until the mid-20th century when McNeil Laboratories developed the brand Tylenol in 1955 and promoted acetaminophen as a safer analgesic and antipyretic alternative to aspirin.
