Bubble gum was invented in 1928 by Walter Diemer, a 23-year-old accountant working for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia. Diemer accidentally created a less sticky, stretchier gum that allowed bubbles to be blown easily, which he then marketed as "Dubble Bubble." The gum was pink because pink was the only food coloring available in the factory at the time. His invention quickly became a commercial success, selling out in local stores and helping Fleer dominate the bubble gum market.
