Chopsticks were invented in ancient China, with the earliest archaeological evidence dating back to around 1200 BCE during the Shang dynasty. Originally, they were likely used as cooking utensils to handle food in pots of hot water and only later became primary eating utensils by around 400 CE. The widespread use of chopsticks is sometimes linked to Confucian values emphasizing nonviolence and moderation, as knives were discouraged at the dining table for being associated with violence.
