Methamphetamine, commonly known as meth, was first synthesized in 1893 by Japanese chemist Nagayoshi Nagai. Later, in 1919, another Japanese chemist, Akira Ogata, developed a more efficient method to create the crystalline form of methamphetamine, which is the form most commonly known today. Methamphetamine is a chemical derivative of amphetamine and was originally developed from ephedrine, a substance found in the ephedra plant. Before methamphetamine, amphetamine itself was first synthesized in 1887 by Romanian chemist Lazar Edeleanu. Methamphetamine gained notable use during World War II when it was used by soldiers in various armies to increase alertness and endurance. After the war, methamphetamine saw medical and recreational use, eventually leading to regulations due to abuse concerns.
