Pancakes do not have a single inventor. They are an ancient food with origins tracing back to prehistoric times, around 70,000 years ago, where evidence of plant-based patties cooked on hot surfaces was found. In recorded history, the ancient Greeks and Romans made early forms of pancakes around 500 B.C.E., known as "tagenites" in Greece, made from wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk. Pancakes evolved over centuries with various cultures creating their own versions. The first official pancake recipe from the 16th century was by a Dutch cook. Pancakes were also significant in Christian traditions like Lent for using up certain ingredients before fasting periods. American- style pancakes, made popular by Dutch settlers in the 1700s, evolved into the form familiar today.
