The polio vaccine was invented by Jonas Edward Salk. He developed one of the first successful vaccines against polio, using a killed (inactivated) poliovirus to safely generate immunity without causing the disease. Salk's vaccine was first announced as successful in 1955, and he chose not to patent it in order to maximize its global distribution. This vaccine dramatically reduced polio cases around the world and was a major medical breakthrough.
