Softball was invented by George Warren Hancock in 1887 in Chicago. The game originated indoors at the Farragut Boat Club, where after a Yale-Harvard football game, Hancock tied a boxing glove into the shape of a ball, marked a diamond on the floor, and broke a broom handle to use as a bat, thus creating the first game of softball. He developed the rules shortly thereafter and the game quickly gained popularity, eventually being played outdoors as well.
