The fire extinguisher was first invented in a primitive form in 1723 by Ambrose Godfrey, a chemist who developed a device that used a cask of fire- extinguishing liquid and an explosive mechanism to scatter it onto fires. However, the first modern portable fire extinguisher, which is closer to what we use today, was invented in 1816 by British military officer Captain George William Manby. His invention consisted of a copper vessel containing a solution of pearl ash (potassium carbonate) and compressed air to propel the solution onto fires effectively.
