The Rubik's Cube was invented by Ernő Rubik, a Hungarian architect and professor of architecture. He created the first working prototype of the cube in 1974 while working as a professor of design. Originally called the "Magic Cube," he applied for a patent in 1975. The cube was designed as a teaching tool to help understand three-dimensional movement and concepts, but it turned out to be a highly challenging puzzle with over 43 quintillion possible configurations. It became internationally famous and hugely popular in the 1980s under the name "Rubik's Cube".
