Vaccines were invented by English physician Edward Jenner. In 1796, Jenner created the first vaccine by using material from cowpox to protect against smallpox, pioneering the concept of vaccination. The term "vaccine" and "vaccination" derive from "vacca," the Latin word for cow, referenced from Jenner's work with cowpox against smallpox. Jenner is often called the "father of immunology" for his work in this area.

Later, Louis Pasteur further developed the field by creating vaccines for other diseases such as rabies and anthrax through the process of attenuating microbes, which founded the science of immunology as we know it today.
