Anne Frank was a German-born Jewish girl who became world-famous as a diarist of the Holocaust. Born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, she and her family moved to Amsterdam in 1934 to escape the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. During the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, Anne and her family went into hiding in a secret annex behind her father's business building in Amsterdam in 1942 to avoid Nazi persecution. They remained in hiding for about two years until they were discovered and arrested in 1944. Anne kept a diary during her time in hiding, documenting her daily life, thoughts, and feelings. Tragically, Anne and her sister Margot died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early 1945 at around age 15. Her father, Otto Frank, was the only family member to survive the Holocaust. He later published Anne's diary, which has become one of the most famous and widely read accounts of the Holocaust, translated into over 70 languages and inspiring plays and films. Anne Frank remains a powerful symbol of the human impact of Nazi atrocities and the resilience of the human spirit.
