Chandler Groff is the main villain introduced in Season 4 of Outer Banks , played by J. Anthony Crane. He first appears as the grieving widower of Larissa Genrette and Wes Genrette’s son-in-law, but the season eventually reveals that he’s also JJ Maybank’s biological father.
Chandler Groff’s role
Groff becomes involved with the Pogues during their search for the Blue Crown, presenting himself as a useful ally while hiding his real intentions. He was once connected to the Lupine Corsairs, a dangerous group of treasure hunters, but betrayed them in pursuit of the crown for himself.
As the season progresses, Groff’s behavior grows increasingly sinister. He’s linked to the deaths of Wes Genrette and Larissa, although parts of his earlier history and motives remain unclear. His main goal is to obtain the Blue Crown and gain control of the Genrette family’s wealth and property.
His connection to JJ
One of the season’s biggest twists is that Groff is JJ’s real father. JJ had always believed that Luke Maybank was his biological father, but Season 4 reveals that Groff abandoned him as a baby and arranged for Luke to raise him instead.
The revelation makes Groff’s betrayal especially cruel. In the Season 4 finale, JJ gives Groff the Blue Crown in an attempt to save Kiara, but Groff stabs him anyway, leaving JJ fatally wounded.
Who plays him?
Chandler Groff is portrayed by American actor J. Anthony Crane. The character is written as a calculating, violent antagonist whose grief and family connections initially make him appear more sympathetic than he really is.
Groff is therefore more than another treasure hunter in Outer Banks : he’s the central threat of Season 4 and the person responsible for turning JJ’s family mystery into one of the show’s most tragic storylines.
