The four presidents carved on Mount Rushmore are:
- George Washington, the 1st President of the United States, symbolizing the birth of the nation.
- Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President, representing the expansion of the country, notably through the Louisiana Purchase.
- Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, symbolizing the development of the United States.
- Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President, representing the preservation of the nation during its darkest years, including the Civil War
Each head is about 60 feet (18 meters) tall and the memorial is located in the Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota
. The sculpture was created by Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum between 1927 and 1941
