The first Vice President of India was Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He took oath as Vice President on 13 May 1952 and later served as the President of India. Radhakrishnan was an eminent educationalist and philosopher from Tamil Nadu, and his birthday, 5th September, is celebrated as Teacher's Day in India
