Tom Osborne is a legendary American college football coach, best known for leading the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers to three national championships during his 25-year tenure as head coach from 1973 to 1997. Beyond coaching, he’s also a former politician, college athletics administrator, and founder of the TeamMates Mentoring program.
Early Life and Playing Career
Born Thomas William Osborne on February 23, 1937, in Hastings, Nebraska, he grew up in the state and excelled in multiple sports. As a high school athlete, he was all-state in football and basketball and won the state discus throw in track. He later played college football at Nebraska, earning all- conference honors as a quarterback.
Coaching Legacy at Nebraska
Osborne’s coaching career at Nebraska began as a volunteer graduate assistant under Bob Devaney, who later convinced him to join the staff full-time. When Devaney stepped down, Osborne took over as head coach in 1973 and held the position for a quarter-century.
His record speaks for itself: 255 wins, 49 losses, and 3 ties-a .836 winning percentage that ranks among the highest in college football history. Under his leadership, the Cornhuskers captured 13 conference titles and three national championships in the 1990s (1994, 1995, and 1997). His teams were known for discipline, consistency, and a powerful running game.
Beyond the Sidelines
After retiring from coaching, Osborne stayed active in public life. He served as Nebraska’s athletic director and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district. He also founded TeamMates Mentoring, a program that pairs adult mentors with students to support their academic and personal growth.
Honors and Recognition
Osborne’s contributions to football and society have earned him numerous accolades. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and, in July 2026, became the first living person voted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame. His legacy endures not just in statistics, but in the thousands of players and students he influenced over decades.
