Wes Moore is an American politician, businessman, author, and veteran currently serving as the 63rd governor of Maryland since 2023. He is Maryland's first African-American governor and the third African-American person elected governor of any U.S. state
. Born on October 15, 1978, in Takoma Park, Maryland, Moore was raised primarily in New York. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and earned a master's degree from Wolfson College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar
. He served as a lieutenant and paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, including combat deployment in Afghanistan, and retired from the military in 2014
. Moore has a diverse career background including work as an investment banker in New York, CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation (a major anti-poverty organization), and founder of BridgeEdU, a company supporting underserved college students
. He is also a bestselling author of several books addressing race, equity, and opportunity, notably The Other Wes Moore , which is widely read in Maryland schools
. In addition to his political and business career, Moore has produced and hosted television programs, including a PBS miniseries on veterans and a show on the Oprah Winfrey Network
. He is married with two children and resides in Baltimore
. Moore won the 2022 Maryland gubernatorial election and took office in January 2023
