Fanta was made by Max Keith, the German head of Coca-Cola's operations in Germany during World War II. Due to trade embargoes that cut off the supply of Coca-Cola syrup ingredients, Max Keith had to create a new soft drink using available ingredients in Germany such as whey and apple fiber. This led to the creation of Fanta in 1940 in Nazi Germany. The name "Fanta" was coined by a salesman named Joe Knipp, inspired by the German word "Fantasie," meaning imagination.
