Jama Masjid in Delhi was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656. The construction involved over 5,000 workers and was supervised primarily by Saadullah Khan, the wazir (prime minister) during Shah Jahan's reign. The mosque was inaugurated by Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari, an imam from Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan). Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India and was originally called Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa, meaning "mosque commanding view of the world".
