McGraw Hill was founded by James H. McGraw and John A. Hill. The origins date back to 1888 when James H. McGraw, a former school teacher from upstate New York, purchased The American Journal of Railway Appliances. John A. Hill was already involved in publishing as an editor of railroad trade journals. They started their own publishing companies—McGraw Publishing Company in 1899 and Hill Publishing Company in 1902. In 1909, they formed an alliance by merging their book divisions, and after John A. Hill's death in 1916, their companies fully merged in 1917 to form the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, with James H. McGraw as president.
