Venmo was made by Andrew Kortina and Iqram Magdon-Ismail. They founded the American mobile payment service in 2009, initially developing a prototype that sent money through text messages, which later evolved into a smartphone app for transferring funds between users. The two founders met as freshman roommates at the University of Pennsylvania and were inspired to create Venmo while helping a friend start a yogurt shop and dealing with the inconvenience of traditional payment methods. Venmo was named by combining "vendere," Latin for "to sell," and "Mo," short for "mobile".
