A post-exposure medical evaluation may be performed by a licensed physician or a licensed healthcare professional whose legally permitted scope of practice allows independent performance of the required medical activities. This evaluation is typically confidential, offered at no cost to the exposed individual, and follows current recommendations by the U.S. Public Health Service. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs), physician assistants, and employers are generally not qualified to independently perform this evaluation. Such evaluations include documentation of exposure, testing, counseling, and post- exposure prophylaxis if indicated, conducted or supervised by a licensed healthcare provider.
