Transport for London (TfL) is a local government body responsible for most of the transport network in London. It is created by the Greater London Authority (GLA) Act 1999 and operates under the authority of the Mayor of London. TfL is effectively owned and governed by the Greater London Authority and the Mayor of London, who has general duty and control over policies and operations of TfL. The transit services under TfL's umbrella include the London Underground, London Overground, buses, trams, and more, with some operations directly managed by TfL and others run by private-sector franchisees under contract. The central British government used to fund TfL but has tapered this off in favor of self-sufficiency, with major funding now coming from the GLA and fares collected within the system.
