Universal Music Group (UMG) is primarily owned by a combination of shareholders, with the major stakes held by:
- Vincent Bolloré, a French media mogul, owns about 18% directly.
- Vivendi, the French media conglomerate, holds about 10%.
- Tencent, the Chinese technology and media company, owns about 20%.
- Pershing Square Holdings, an investment company, owns around 10%.
- The remaining shares are held by other public shareholders as UMG is publicly traded on the Amsterdam Euronext exchange.
Together, the Bolloré family's direct and Vivendi’s stake represent the largest single alliance controlling UMG, with Tencent also being a significant shareholder. Vivendi used to own 100% of UMG before it was spun off as a publicly traded company in 2021.
