Paxlovid should be taken by individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and have mild-to-moderate symptoms with onset within the last 5 days, and who are at higher risk for developing severe COVID-19 that could lead to hospitalization or death. This includes adults 18 years and older, as well as children 12 and older who weigh at least 88 pounds, with risk factors such as older age (especially over 50 or 65), being unvaccinated or not up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations, or having underlying conditions like cancer, diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease, immune system disorders, certain lung diseases, and other medical conditions that increase the risk of severe illness. Pregnant individuals and those with certain medications should consult a healthcare provider for safety evaluation. The treatment must be started within 5 days of symptom onset to be effective.
