Chester A. Arthur was succeeded by Grover Cleveland, who became the 22nd president of the United States in 1885. Arthur served as the 21st president from September 19, 1881, following the assassination of James A. Garfield, until March 4, 1885. Cleveland then returned to office, winning the presidency again in the 1884 election and serving a non-consecutive second term.
