Selena Quintanilla, often known simply as Selena, was an American singer- songwriter born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was famously known as the "Queen of Tejano Music," a genre that blends Latin, jazz, and other musical elements. Selena was one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century and was influential in popularizing Tejano music in mainstream markets. She began her music career as a child in a family band called Selena y Los Dinos and achieved widespread acclaim in the 1980s and 1990s, winning the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year nine consecutive times and a Grammy Award in 1994. Selena also ventured into fashion with her clothing line and boutiques. Tragically, she was murdered at the age of 23 on March 31, 1995, by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques. Despite her early death, Selena remains a beloved cultural icon with a lasting legacy in Latin music and fashion.
