The captain of the Titanic was Edward John Smith. He was a British sea captain born on January 27, 1850, in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. Smith had a long career at sea, joining the White Star Line in 1880 and eventually becoming its senior captain. He was known as the "Millionaire’s Captain" due to his popularity with wealthy passengers. Smith took command of the Titanic for its maiden voyage in April 1912 and was planning to retire after this voyage. He died when the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after the ship struck an iceberg. Smith was last seen on the bridge during the sinking, and his body was never recovered
