The first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice was Sonia Sotomayor. She was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Barack Obama and took office on August 8, 2009. She is also the first woman of color and the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, New York, to Puerto Rican parents and has had a distinguished judicial career prior to her Supreme Court appointment.
