The Governor-General of India in the year 1717 did not exist as the office was created much later, in 1773. The first Governor-General of Bengal was Warren Hastings, appointed in 1773, and the first official Governor-General of all British India was Lord William Bentinck in 1833
. Therefore, in 1717, there was no Governor-General of India because British colonial administration had not yet been established in India at that time. The British East India Company was still in its early trading phase without formal governance over Indian territories. The position of Governor-General was only established in the late 18th century.
