The man widely described as the hero at Bondi Beach is 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed (also reported as Ahmed Ahmed or Ahmed El‑Ahmed), a local Sydney fruit shop owner.
What he did
During the mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, he left cover, rushed one of the gunmen from behind, wrestled him to the ground, and managed to disarm him. Officials and witnesses have said his actions likely saved many lives, and he has been praised as a “genuine” or “true” hero by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and other leaders.
His condition after the attack
Reports from his family and local media state that Ahmed suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and hand and underwent surgery in hospital. Relatives and officials have said he is recovering, while public campaigns and offers of support have been organized in recognition of his actions.
