The Greeks won the Persian War. Key victories included the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, where the Athenians defeated the Persian forces; the naval Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE, where the Greek fleet, led by Themistocles, decisively defeated the larger Persian fleet; and the Battle of Plataea in 479 BCE, where the Greek army decisively defeated the remaining Persian forces. These battles ultimately ended Persian ambitions of conquering Greece and ensured Greek independence.
