Dante's Inferno was written by Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet who lived from 1265 to 1321. It is the first part of his epic poem, The Divine Comedy, which narrates a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. Dante wrote the poem in the Italian vernacular, specifically the Tuscan dialect, and it is considered one of the greatest literary works of the Middle Ages and the most important poem in Italian literature.
