The novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" was written by Mary Shelley. She started writing it when she was 18 years old, and it was first published anonymously in 1818. Mary Shelley's name appeared on the second edition published in 1821. The story was inspired by her experiences and discussions with companions about galvanism and scientific experiments, as well as a competition among friends to write a ghost story during the "Year without a Summer" in 1816. The novel is considered an early example of science fiction and one of the best-known works of English literature.
