The song "Leaving on a Jet Plane" was written by American singer-songwriter John Denver in 1966. Originally titled "Babe, I Hate to Go," Denver wrote and recorded it as part of his debut demo. The song was later renamed "Leaving on a Jet Plane" in 1967. Although Denver recorded the song himself, it became widely popular through the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary's version, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. Denver's writing of the song reflected his personal feelings about leaving loved ones behind while on tour.
