The Book of Revelation was written by the apostle John, traditionally identified as John the Apostle, around AD 95 while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. The author identifies himself as John several times in the book, and early Christian tradition almost unanimously affirms this John as the author. Although some modern scholars question the exact identity, the dominant historical view remains that John the Apostle wrote Revelation, guided by visions he received from Jesus Christ. The book was addressed to seven churches in Asia Minor and contains prophetic visions about the future.
