who wrote the virginia statute for religious freedom?

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was written by Thomas Jefferson. He drafted it in 1777, and it was introduced into the Virginia General Assembly in 1779. The statute was enacted into law on January 16, 1786. It disestablished the Church of England in Virginia and guaranteed freedom of religion to people of all faiths. Jefferson considered this statute one of his three greatest achievements, alongside the Declaration of American Independence and the founding of the University of Virginia.
