The face on the U.S. nickel is that of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. He has appeared on the obverse (heads side) of the nickel since 1938. The current portrait, which shows Jefferson facing forward with a slight smile, was introduced in 2006 and is based on an 1800 Rembrandt Peale painting
. On the reverse (tails side) of the nickel is Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia home, which he designed himself. This design has been featured on the nickel since 1938, except for a brief period during 2004 and 2005 when special designs commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition were used
. In summary:
- Obverse (heads): Thomas Jefferson, facing forward since 2006 (previously in profile since 1938)
- Reverse (tails): Monticello, Jefferson's home
This design honors Jefferson's legacy as a Founding Father, author of the Declaration of Independence, and a significant figure in American history
