why are digestives called digestives

Digestive biscuits are called "digestives" because they were originally developed in the 19th century by two Scottish doctors who believed the biscuits would help with digestion. This belief was based on the fact that the biscuits contained sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which was thought to have antacid properties that could aid in digestion. Although modern digestive biscuits may no longer provide these digestion benefits, the name has stuck due to this original purpose. The biscuits also typically contain wholemeal flour, which is higher in fiber and considered somewhat healthier than other biscuits, contributing to their digestive aid reputation.
