Gnats are in the house mainly because they are attracted to sources of food and breeding sites such as overripe or rotting fruits, overwatered plants with moist soil, dirty drains, and garbage that contains decomposing organic matter. They thrive where there is moisture and organic decay. Common causes for gnats indoors include:
- Abandoned or overripe fruits and vegetables left out where fruit flies can breed.
- Overwatered houseplants with wet soil, which attract fungus gnats that lay eggs in the soil.
- Delayed emptying of kitchen trash cans that hold decomposing organic matter.
- Moist and dirty drains or pipes that harbor breed sites for drain flies.
- Moisture buildup in bathrooms and kitchens from leaks or faulty plumbing.
- Fruit-scented hygiene products can also attract gnats.
Gnats reproduce quickly, with eggs hatching into adults within a few days, so their populations can increase rapidly as long as breeding sites and food sources exist indoors. Identifying the source of the gnats is key to eliminating them. Removing the food and moisture sources and proper sanitation can effectively prevent or control gnat infestations in the home.
