There are many gnats in a house typically because of sources attracting different types of gnats:
- Fungus gnats are attracted to moist soil in overwatered houseplants where their larvae can thrive.
- Fruit flies are drawn to overripe or rotting fruits and vegetables, as well as sugary drinks left exposed.
- Drain flies breed in moist, organic matter inside drains, sinks, and other areas with standing water or leaks.
Common causes include overwatering houseplants, leaving fruits or food out too long, delayed emptying of trash cans, moisture buildup from plumbing leaks or faulty pipes, and even fruit-scented products. These conditions create ideal breeding grounds for gnats, leading to infestations in the home.
To reduce gnats, minimizing moisture, promptly discarding rotting food and garbage, and addressing leaks or damp areas in drains and plants are key measures.
